Introduction The purpose of the experiment was to determine the rate and magnitude of consolidation for the given soil sample that was laterally restrained and allowed to drain axially while being subjected to a controlled stress loading. Consolidation is the process in which a soil sample will decrease in volume due to the expulsion of water from the void space. After the load is removed from the sample, the sample will regain some of its volume. For a sand, the increase in pore pressure due to the load will dissipate rapidly because of the high permeability. For a clay, pore pressure will dissipate slowly due to low permeability. A deformation versus log of time plot was prepared using the data gained from this experiment. A void ratio versus axial stress graph was also prepared using this data. The former is used to get the rate of consolidation and the latter is used to view the magnitude of consolidation. The rate and magnitude of consolidation obtained for this sample is proportional to the rate and magnitude of consolidation in the field if the depth of a sample is known. If a soil has a high water content, a large load such as a foundation, will cause the volume to decrease in a phenomenon known as shrinkage. It is important to know the rate of consolidation so settlement
