Part I—Hands-on Lab

For this assignment, you will display and modify information from a Microsoft Access database by using SQL commands.

Using the Microsoft Access database Books, write SQL statements for the following tasks. Once complete, copy the SQL statements from Microsoft Access and paste them in a Microsoft Word document that will be submitted along with part II of the assignment.

  • Write an SQL statement to display the publication ID, publication date, cost, and category of each book planned for publication ID number 4.
  • Repeat the previous task but include ID and Date as column aliases for the first two columns.
  • Write an SQL statement to display the least expensive retail price book in each book category.
  • Repeat the previous task but sort the displayed categories in the descending order.
  • Write an SQL statement to display the customer number, city of destination, and shipping date for all shipments with order number above 2. (Hint: Use the Orders table.)
  • Repeat the previous task but further restrict the output to shipping dates after January 1, 2013. (Hint: The date restriction will require a format identical to the one displayed in the previous task, and it must be surrounded by pound signs—#01/01/2013# for example.)
  • Write an SQL statement to display the publication ID, average retail price, and average cost of all books. Group the output by publication ID.
  • Write INSERT statements to add the following data to the Publisher table:

Course Project Part 2—Identifying Entities and Attributes

In Week 1, you developed an initial idea to build a database. You followed the systems development life cycle (SDLC) and got an idea to start with. Now, it is time to start building your database.

What next?

The project description developed in W1 Assignment 3 is a first draft, so consider it a rough draft. This means that you should continue to develop your idea.

The next step is to select some nouns in your project description. For example, a project has invoices, invoice distributions, and suppliers as nouns. These nouns are entities, or tables, that would be used to create the E-R model. Then, the adjectives and verbs that describe the nouns would become the attributes, or columns.

Therefore, in the example that we considered, we might have the following entities and attributes:

Using your knowledge of selecting entities and attributes, complete the following tasks for this week:

  • Review your project descriptions and come up with five entities and some attributes that describe the entities. Do not identify more than five attributes for each entity.
  • In a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, define six columns (nouns) from the project description you submitted in W1 Assignment 3 that you consider key to your database. These will be the tables for the database. Then, in the rows for each column, define the attributes (adjectives).

You have taken your creative idea and started to move the nouns and adjectives you identified in a logical model—the E-R model. This will give you a working outline of the tables that will be created in the final script.

After you complete the lab and course project, collate the information from both in a 3- to 4-page report in a Microsoft Word document.

This have not been successful due to lack of proper mechanisms put in place as they are using manual systems in managing their work and records. There is no proper computerized garbage data management system and an application platform that can ease the garbage collection operation. Problem Statement With the Efforts tried by the firms involved in the cleaning and collection of garbage, has been unsuccessful due to: i. ii. iii. iv. Lack of proper mechanism of identifying and locating exact areas and sites for garbage collection. Lack of a proper medium of communication to garbage collection. Lack of a proper way of creating awareness to the public. Lack of a data management system that can indicate cleaned and not cleaned areas within a certain period. Proposed Solution i. To implement an application platform to make it easier in creating awareness for the garbage collection. ii. To have an application platform that will be easily used by anyone. iii. To set-up an application that will enable users to report places to be cleaned. Objectives Due to these problems encountered, the solutions are:i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. To develop an application platform that will enable in reporting places for garbage collection. To develop an application that is user friendly and easier to be used. To develop an application that will enable efficiency to the human resource in collection of garbage. Project Justification Developing this project will important in the following ways: 1. Reducing time much spent by garbage collectors going around searching for garbage by now just going to exact places for collection. 2. Enable in creating awareness against unhygienic environs. 3. Making all places a friendly environment which will translate to the productivity at work. 4. Recording and keeping data in waste management for future use. Data collection and analysis The questionnaires, user story and the interview are the one which will be used in data collection. The questionnaires and user story will be given to residents, garbage collectors and health officers concerned to help in understanding the following: 1. Whether the proposed system should be implemented. 2. The system is economical. 3. Does the system make any impact compared to the current? Methodology Methodology is a framework that helps in system development plan, analyze, design, implement and control the system development process. I will be using Agile Methodology in developing my application. Agile methodology is a family of development methodologies characterized by short iterative cycles and extensive testing; active involvement of users for establishing, prioritizing, and verifying requirements. I chose this type of methodology because it suites the type of application I am developing. This is due Size, Criticality and Dynamism factors supported by this Methodology that are the big concern in my development of this application. It involves planning and Selection, Analysis, Design, Implementation and operation in the System Development. The model under this Methodology that I will use is Rapid Application Development (RAD) which can be represented diagrammatically as shown below. The following are different ways which will be used to test program: Specification-based Testing It aims to test the functionality of software according to the applicable requirements. Regression Testing It focusses on finding detects after a major code change has occurred. Smoke and Sanity testing Sanity testing- determines whether it is reasonable to proceed with further testing. Smoke testing- consists of minimal attempts to operate the software, designed to determine whether there are any basic problems that will prevent it from working at all. Installation Testing Assures that the system is installed correctly and working at actual customer’s hardware. Acceptance testing This is the last phase of testing which involves taking final system to the real users too.
