Sexual harassment can be verbal, written or physical. Verbal is when the victims are
harassed by the words of the mouth. When looking at most of the workplaces, the victims can
be either gender but in most cases, women are the majority (Fielden & Hunt, 2014). The
harasser may talk to the victim in a bad way regarding his/her sex life. Written harassment is
when sexually abusive words are written down addressing a certain individual. The most
critical one is physical harassment which entails body contact. This is when the victims are
forced to have sex in exchange for promotion and other rewards. Sexual harassment is a
broad term which entails offhand comments, simple teasing, and other acts. Some people take
this action lightly but it significantly impacts on their working environment. When employers
harass their employees, this is considered as employment discrimination and it is illegal. In
this discussion, several policies will be considered which are related to sexual harassment.
According to the Supreme Court, employers are liable for any sexual harassment by
their supervisors (Schultz, 2018). This is a common problem especially in the police
department because most of the seniors take advantage of their positions at work. Being the
captain in charge of operations at the police department, I will implement a training program
so that all the employees can be aware of this sexual harassment policy. Awareness will be
made on this issue. Different channels like social media and other platforms will be used to
communicate about this issue. Creating awareness is the best method to use when trying to
communicate a message not only to the police department but also to the other citizens out
there. This is because sometimes people go to the police station to report incidence and the
officers in charge try to ask for some sexual favors in exchange for their services. By creating
awareness, those who are not aware of this policy will know about it and they can never be
harassed. Lack of knowledge about some of these things is what increases this act at the
workstations because the victims do not know how to handle such situations.
I will ensure that women are well aware of their rights at the station. When looking at
most of the police stations, men are seen to dominate the women and this is because some
people believe that women should be submissive to men even at the workplace. With this in
mind, the female officer ends up doing anything which they are told to do by their
supervisors. During the training, they will be reminded of their rights in the society and at the
workplace. Since a police station is a government institution, there is the right protocol which
is supposed to be followed when reporting some issues. According to the Supreme Court
rulings, the employers are supposed to be responsible and handle all the problems related to
work. When the police are harassed by their supervisors, they should report them to the head
of departments. If nothing is done, they have the right to go to court just like any other
There are a number of challenges that exist to this decision –making process and
training implementation. One is corruption. Corruption is the greatest problem facing most
of the police departments (Violanti et al., 2016). The leaders who are put in place are corrupt
and greedy for money and power. When cases are taken to them, by some of the officers, an
action is never taken because the offenders are the supervisors who have money. The
offenders give them money and the issue is not dealt with. Sometimes the employer might be
a friend to the offenders that implies that when they harass their junior, nothing can be done
to them by their employers. Another issue is fear. This is the greatest enemy in people's life.
A majority of the people who are sexually harassed prefer keeping such secrets to themselves
because they are ashamed of how people might take them. Some of the supervisors and other
senior persons may give threats to their seniors. This means that they cannot report them
because they might lose their jobs in the long run. When all these factors are considered, the
majority prefer to keep their mouths shut, no matter what they go through.
Another challenge is the lack of respective departments within the police station
where such cases can be reported. All the police stations should have a department where the
sexual harassment cases should be reported. This can ensure the safety of the victims instead
of them going to report to their seniors. This issue has been of major concern especially with
the police stations and not only the women but also men are harassed and the employer ends
up taking no actions when such cases are reported to them. Money is also another challenge
because a number of victims might not have enough cash to pay for their lawyers. Paying for
a lawyer who can represent a person to court is very expensive and might be a long process.
With all these considerations, the victims prefer assuming the acts which are done to them
and they persevere at their workplaces. The individuals being reported in most cases are the
seniors at work and this implies that they might have more money than the victims. When
taken to court, they end up winning the case and being discharged from custody.
There are several policies which have been put in place by the local police department
while other policies are established by the state law enforcement agency. One of the policies
from the local police department is that those employees who participate in any investigation
of a complaint, are supposed to be protected (Williams, 2018). One of the policies by the
state law enforcement agency is that those employees who are found to have subjected
another employee to unwelcome conduct of sexual nature will be disciplined. There are some
similarities between the two policies. The policy from the local police department is more
concerned with the other employees also apart from the main victim. The agency, on the
other hand, is also concerned about the other employees that might be involved in the process
of investigation. When looking at these two policies, it is clear that when it comes to sexual
harassment other people should also be involved apart from the victim and the harasser.
The two policies also show some differences. The local police department policy is
seemed to protect all the participants that might be involved in the investigation (Brown,
2017). The protection of all the employees who might be involved in the investigation shows
that the local police are concerned about other people who might be used as witnesses for
either the victim or the harassers. The agency policy, on the other hand, is more concerned on
those employees who could have subjected their colleagues to sexual harassment. This is very
essential because in most cases, employees are the ones who put their fellow colleagues into
problems. An example, if a person wants to look good and receive a promotion, they have to
do anything being told to them by their supervisors. If this person is a witness of the
harassment issue, he/she might side with the harasser during the judgment in order to protect
his work position.
According to me, sexual harassment is a common experience among women in law
enforcement. This is because when looking at most of the higher positions, they are given to
the men and it is difficult for a lady to have a higher job position. Some of the women in the
department are more learned than men but they end up being given jobs with lower payments.
In order to get the promotion, ladies are forced to have sex with their seniors so that they can
be promoted (Pateman, 2016). Most of the supervisors and other senior people take
advantage of their job positions by exchanging rewards with sex. With the current population
increase, the issue of unemployment is becoming a threat to society and most of the women
are scared to lose their jobs. Therefore, they prefer to persevere being harassed provided they
have to keep their jobs. Another reason that puts women at risk is that most of the ladies who
are police are single parents. This implies that they are the breadwinners at their homes. In
order to cater for their families and pay all the bills, they have to do something extra which is
against their will so that they can earn more by being promoted.
This paper has discussed some of the policies which are put in place by the
government and other organizations. Each organization has established their policies in
relation to sexual harassment at work. When looking at different jobs, the police station
seems to be the primary victims when sexual harassment is concerned. In order to fight
against this issue, all the rooms in any department should be installed with a CCTV camera
that can monitor all the department activities. This is because most of these harassments
happen within the departments due to lack of an improved security system. More concern has
been given to the female but it is important to remember even men are the victims in some
