1)Last week, you formed the basis of your paper by polishing your thesis statement, writing topic sentences, evaluating, selecting, and documenting scholarly articles that support your argument, and outlining your paper. Now you are ready to begin drafting your paper. Week 3 focuses on expanding the argument content for your paper and integrating the research you have gathered to support your argument in a preliminary rough draft. Expanding your argument comes through developing body paragraphs that thoroughly present your position and reasons.

When forming the body paragraphs of your paper, it is important to remember that an effective paragraph contains:

  • A topic sentence
  • Relevant details about the topic sentence
  • Supporting research
  • A concluding/transitional sentence that leads the reader to the next point

You already created the groundwork for these paragraphs in your outline, and this week you will expand your discussion.

The readings this week assist you with integrating the research you have found within your paper to thoroughly support your argument.

Once you have completed the body paragraphs of your paper, you write an introduction paragraph to properly introduce your argument and a conclusion paragraph to bring your paper to a close.

2)I am very excited to begin my rough draft for my paper. I will most likely change the wording in my thesis statement and my topic sentences. I find the transitional sentences to be time consuming for me to write. I want my paragraphs to flow and move from point to point easily. I want to keep the reader intrigued and captivated. In the past I had trouble with this and would be all over the place.

3)Writing in academic style requires many considerations, some of which we have already covered in this course. This chapter discusses ways to focus your argument and draft your paper with research.

4)The goal of an argument paper is subject to the strong thesis statement. This tutorial drives homes that fact; along with the supporting evidence and then winding the paper to its conclusion. I also observed that it is challenging to develop a specific writing skill; however it is crucial to bring together the content and the structure of all three points. I found the introduction to be the most challenging element. I have been pondering for quite a while how to begin my paper and trying to keep in mind that the points mentioned in the introduction have to be substantiated. The easier part is the conclusion. It is unlikely that I will not be able to summarize my paper, after spending time and effort in developing and justifying my argument.

5)An academic essay should have no fewer than five paragraphs: an introduction, at least three body paragraph, and a conclusion.

Writing the introduction, at least three body paragraphs, and the conclusion for your argument paper can seem daunting at first. Which element do you find the most challenging and why? Which element do you find the least challenging and why?

6)Persuasive arguments can use a variety of strategies to convince others of the validity of the argument. Depending on the strategy chosen, the language you use can affect how the argument you present is accepted or rejected.

7)As you begin writing your first draft and incorporating your research, it is important to understand the difference between direct quotes and paraphrases. APA guidelines and academic integrity require that you use and acknowledge both of these appropriately.

8)I realize that most of my paper needs to be in my own words. It is prudent to have good reason to quote directly and know when to paraphrase. It is a work in progress to know when to use any quote for the purpose of making a point. Paraphrasing is useful in explaining a passage that may be difficult for the reader to understand. This takes practice and eventually will lead to an informed argument paper.

Discussion Questions
Response 1
It is always important when writing an academic paper for an individual to have welldeveloped paragraphs that include an introduction part, several body paragraphs, and a
conclusion paragraph. It is also essential for an individual to always develop a topic sentence
for every paragraph and engage in providing a discussion about the topic sentence and raising
various supporting evidence and information in supporting each topic sentence of the
paragraphs. I believe that the introduction part of a paper is the most critical aspect in a paper
since without an individual developing an effective and informing paragraph that contains a
thesis statement it will be difficult for an individual to understand the information presented
in the paper. The importance of a concluding paragraph is that it helps the reader to
understand the thoughts of the writer about the topic that has been discussed in the body
paragraphs.
Response 2
It is imperative when an individual engages in writing research or an argumentative
essay to ensure that the information developed helps to keep the readers intrigued and
captivated. In addition to your post, it is always essential for an individual before beginning
to write any paper to create a rough draft as this will help in the transition of points from one
paragraph to the next which will foster an individual understanding of the concepts
developed. When drafting a paper, it is also essential for a writer to ensure that there is a
well-developed thesis statement as this will enable an individual to develop effective topic
sentences in every paragraph. Initiating this in any paper by an individual it will help in
developing an effective paper which would be easy for an individual to understand.

Response 3
Writing an academic paper is usually not an easy task as it requires an individual to
integrate all the essential aspects of academic style in a paper. As discussed in the course an
effective academic paper must always have an introduction part which needs to have a thesis
statement representing the main idea which the paper will be discussing. Without an
individual drafting an appropriate thesis statement it usually becomes difficult to construct
topic sentences in every paragraph to support the thesis statement developed. In any academic
paper that needs to be written with the standards of academic style, it is also essential for an
individual to include a conclusion in any paper written. Any argument that an individual
provides in a research paper the arguments need to be supported by enough evidence.
