Personal Portfolio or Journal

In education, a portfolio or journal can be defined as a document or reflective narrative that:

(a) helps the learner to understand and extend learning; and

(b) helps the readers of the document gain insight about learning and the learner (McMillan, 1997; Porter & Cleland, 1995).

In this course, students are required to keep (a personal portfolio). As mentioned earlier, the portfolio should be used to document the implications of the course material for effective teaching practices. Students are required to select 8 lectures or topics of their interest and provide information on how the lectures or topics can be used to improve their teaching skills.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
This Act is a four-part (A-D) section of American legislation which is used to ensure that
those learners with disabilities are offered Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) which is
customized according to their specific requirements (Center, 2012). In this context, IDEA helps
teachers to provide students with disabilities a similar opportunity for the purposes of education
in the same ways as those with no disabilities. In doing so, the IDEA operates in four parts, the
first two forms part A while the last two forms part B. The first part of IDEA safeguards the
overall law requirements, the second part safeguards the aid for educating all who are affected
with disability, the third part protects toddlers and infants who are incapacitated from birth up to
three years while the fourth part is comprised of all national support programs which are
administered by the federal government.
The important elements that go along with IDEA enabling teachers to effectively and
efficiently provide equal education between those students with or without education are
confidentiality of information, discipline as well as the transition of services.
Confidentiality of Information
Teachers are entitled to protect the confidentiality of the students. The Family Education
Rights and Privacy Act state that teachers have a responsibility of ensuring the protection of the
student’s confidentiality especially those with disabilities in order not to lower their self-esteem
as well as moral while undertaking their studies (Crockett and Kauffman, 2013). Teachers are
maintaining self-worth of students through protecting their confidentiality.
