Our American Declaration of Independence is the Grandaddy of this genre, and our Texas Declaration of Independence is the beloved descendant. The manner of arguing changes for this kind of essay. Instead of reasons, it is based on grievances. A grievance is a regrettable reason-an ongoing thing, that has resulted in injustice or misery or loss or some kind. Therefore, some action must be taken, and is about to be taken, to correct or halt this ongoing grievance. The Declaration of Independence and The Texas Declaration of Independence, while addressed to the world at large, are directed against individuals in both cases. This was to make it clear that the grievances were not the fault of the people of either country, or even against the general government, but were the fault of specifically inept or corrupt leaders: King George of England, Santa Anna de Lopez of the Republic of Mexico. This is a careful and necessary clarification of where the blame lies, if something unpleasant will result, like war, or loss of income, or loss of a kidney-why?
