Developing Understanding: The Comparison Paper
Write an engaging, insightful paper discussing your museum experience and one work of art
you have seen in person during your museum visit (recent visit – must be this semester).
Due:
Wednesday, November 14, 2018. Please plan wisely; late papers will NOT be accepted.
Length:
2 pages max (approximately 500-700 words), typed and double-spaced. Tip: Emphasize the
content of your writing rather than length; aim to be thorough and also concise.
Goals:

To actively view works of art in a museum.
To write a succinct, well-organized, effective paper.
To accurately and effectively apply art vocabulary.
To demonstrate knowledge gained in this course, as well as the understanding of the
effects of formal elements in the works and the impact of context.
Process:
1.
Visit a museum of your choice from the Museum Paper section on TITANium. Be
adventurous… and enjoy!! To receive full credit, the museum must be from the
TITANium list and you must provide proof of your museum visit (e.g. a date
stamped receipt, parking stub, etc).
2.
Play close attention to the museum setting. Consider: the overall feeling of the space
(outside architecture, and landscape, interior arrangement), lighting, wall text, wall
color, if any, how the works are displayed, etc.
3.
Select one work of art. Look closely. Take notes and free-write (pencil only in
museums). You will need to provide an image of the work of art.
a.
Make a sketch. You won’t be graded on drawing ability; the process will
simply help you look more closely at the art.
b.
Some museums allow photos while others don’t, so please ask first. You
may be able to find your artwork image on the museum website or
brochure.
4.
Note your observations (observable facts in the artwork). Identify key points.
5.
Put your observations in an organized essay format. Aim to analyze and discuss,
rather than simply describing.
6.
See the Museum Paper Checklist below and proofread your paper.
7.
Be sure your name and the page number are on each page (e.g. Hall pg. 2)
8.
Submit a digital copy to Turnitin.com (link will be provided on TITANium). Print
out a paper copy, bring it to class (including images and ticket)– stapled. No
report covers, please.

The Museum Paper Checklist

Follows the Suggestions in the Writing Guidelines from the syllabus

o Introduces the museum and the artwork
your writing must include:
o the name of the museum and a brief description of the museum experience
(e.g. the overall feeling of the space, outside architecture, interior arrangement,
lighting, wall text, wall color, if any, how the works are displayed, etc.)
o the artist’s full name
o the title of the artwork (in italics or quotation marks, used consistently)
o the date of the artwork
o the approximate scale (small, moderate, large) or exact dimensions
o how or where the art is displayed (if this is important to the
impact or meaning)
o Introduces a thesis or main point about the artwork
o briefly mentions points of support (3 max) for this thesis
o smoothly transitions to body paragraphs

Each paragraph is clearly organized, with a topic sentence, explanation, concluding sentence
The essay transitions nicely from one point to the next in a coherent way
Each paragraph supports or builds upon the thesis/main point, adds interest and understanding

o Solidifies the paper’s main point
o Feels fresh (doesn’t simply repeat the thesis and points of support)
o May add a nice concept at the end but does not introduce a whole new topic.
