➢The 13TH Amendment of the United States of America states that
there is “No involuntary servitude except for those who have been
duly convicted of a crime.”
➢This Amendment means it is unconstitutional for a person to be
enslaved. Except for lawbreakers and criminals, it also guarantees
freedom to every American citizen.
➢In his speech on Criminal Justice Reform, President Barrack Obama
mentioned: “The United States is home to 5% of the world’s
population, of which 25% of the population are prisoners.”

➢On April 8, 1864, the 13th Amendment was passed by the United
States Senate to abolish slavery formally. This amendment was
passed after the Civil War.
