On 27th of October 2017, a 47-year-old Robert Bowers who is self-declared white
supremacist shot eleven people of Jewish origin while they were holding Shabbat morning
prayers in the Synagogue. The synagogue is called the Tree of Life which is located in Squirrel
Hill, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania State. The sole suspect of this heinous act had posted antisemitic
views in a cable network called the Gab before he conducted the attack. According to Stewart
and Ward (2018), Bower’s post in Gab was “Hebrew Immigration Aid Society (HIAS) likes to
bring invaders that kill our people. I can not sit by and watch my people were being slaughtered.
Screw your optics. I am going in.” This shooting was the worst to have ever happened in the
history of Jewish people in the United States (Stewart & Ward, 2018).
Tree of Life Synagogue is made of conservative Jewish who practices conservative
Judaism. The neighborhood of the synagogue is predominantly occupied by the Jewish
community. According to Farzan (2018), the Squirrel Hill neighborhood has low crime and it is
never associated with racial discrimination. The only unique antisemitic incident was in 1986
where a student was murdered.
Statistics indicate there has been the rise of online activity to spread antisemitic hate
(Farzan, 2018). The rallying point has been due to the midterm elections in the United States where
the far-right extremists aimed to create an anti-Semitism propaganda. All indicators show that the
rise antisemitic hate as a crime is on the rise like the hate of African Americans and Muslims. For
example, Jewish gravestones have been vandalized in Missouri and Pennsylvania. There is also
reported increase of antisemitic incidents in the universities (Farzan, 2018). This culminated in
what the killer said before shooting, “All Jews Must Die”.
