This piece of course work has two tasks; Task 1 accounts to 70 percent weightage while task 2 accounts to 30 percent.
Task 1
Each student has to submit a report of 2000 words based on a Site visit to /construction site organised by the module tutor. The report is about your observation of the working environment in that construction site and should include aspects like work at height, electricity, excavation, noise, dust, lighting PPE on site, welfare facilities etc. You need to discuss the prevailing conditions and compare it with relevant HSE/ Omani regulations.
Site visit
- The site visit will be arranged by the module tutor on a convenient week day.
- It is the responsibility of the student to attend the visit along with the class. You can submit the assignment only if you visit that particular workplace.
- You can collect the required information by observing the workplace, talking to the employees etc. without creating any nuisance.
- Absence of proper referencing will invite “plagiarism”.
- For citation and referencing follow the Harvard referencing system strictly and all the written materials should be supported with proper citations and references in the report and the presentation.
- You have to follow the specified word limit for the task. But remember that, quality matters, not quantity.
- Use Microsoft Word for word processing. Use A4 paper size settings with 2.5cm margins all around.
- Body text can be Times New Roman 12 point, Text is to be justified.
- The pages should be numbered consecutively, starting with the title page.
- The number of words must be shown at the end of the work submitted. However, content & title pages will not be counted to the total ‘word count’; neither will the list of reference at the end of the work.
- Relevant photographs, diagrams etc. can be included in the report for better explanation. Colour prints will not carry any extra weightage.
Task 2
Presentation
- Each student should present their observations individually in a time frame of 10 mins followed by questions from the module tutor.
- Presentation should be done using MS power point and the soft version of the presentation should be upload in the Blackboard.

Construction safety in construction
industry
Construction safety refers to the practices that are observed in building structures or
infrastructure.
Safety is a first consideration in construction and manufacturing since they involves a
lot of activities that may result to injuries and even death of workers.
The mass construction of buildings and infrastructure without a safety precaution could
bring damages to human health and unwanted damage to body function.
The design experts first consider the requirements, the environmental impact that may
be brought by the construction, the project construction manager looks at the project
scheduling, the budgeting manager considers the available budget, construction-site
safety experts.
Engineering and construction safety
Engineering is a very important and requiring profession.
It forms the basis of everything we do in our day to day lives.
Members of the engineering profession are therefore expected to be on the front line
towards ethical practices.
They are expected to exhibit high standards of integrity and honesty.
Engineers are required to perform and operate under a set standard of professional
ethics and behavior that requires them to adhere to high principles of ethics in their
conduct
The project site I visited
The Construction project undertaken by began in early this year and involves the
construction of a mega residential building and is estimated to be complete on the
exterior by the end of the year.
Having been erected on the sandy terrains of Arabia desert, the structure requires a
mass reinforcement of concrete and steel.
It was constructed to have the strongest foundation as per the information gathered from
the construction engineer.
The building holds high height records, and is designated as a strongest building to
coupe up with the strong winds of the Oman
Safety measures provided at construction site
there is a strict notice that anyone visiting or entering the site must inform the security
officer at the entry gate.
Upon notifying the security, you are given a set of safety gear which serves to protect
you as you go around the site or as you work.
This set of protective gear includes a strong helmet, a pair of gloves, a pair of safety
boots for the workers, goggles, and a company overall wear.
Dust masks are also provided as there is a lot of dust in the site.
All workers are required by the company to have these protective gear at all times as
they work so long as they are within the site.
There is a notice placed within the site that gives directives on what to wear and its
purpose detailing all protective gear needed for the site.

I also consulted the design engineer of the project and learnt a lot about the design
safety of the building.
I learnt that safety precaution does not apply only in the site while the construction
work is going on.
It starts early during the design phases of the project.
Safety does not only cover worker in the site but neighboring environments and the
residents after completion.
The designing engineer who designed the building is well known as he also designed
the famous
