Introduction
Supplier management can be costly, and companies can save costs through execution of
prudent supply chain techniques. Supply chin holding costs include the costs of storing unsold
inventory that is added to the total inventory costs together with ordering costs and shortage
costs. A company can reduce its inventory costs as well as its overall operational costs by
lowering shipping costs through an effective supply chain procedure (Fredendall, 2016). For
instance, the best way to ensure the company has sufficient operational cash is to collect
inventory fast and receive payments. In business, the production costs determine the profitability
of the venture. Business profit is determined by deducting the cost of goods sold. The cost of
goods sold also includes the deduction of operational expenses. Supply chain inventory costs
contribute to the cost of goods sold and affect the overall income of the business.
Scenario
In the present scenario, al Baik food store needs to ship replacement parts for their ovens.
The company’s supply chain management is faced with two alternatives which include the use of
either, the two-day freight or the five-day freight. The underlying issue, however, is to minimize
costs while. The company realizes that the holding cost per unit is 38 riyals per year and the
required oven replacement units are 2000. The total shipping cost will, therefore, amount to
76000 riyals. Although using the five-day freight saves up to 750 riyals in shipment costs, the
primary consideration is in the holding costs.
From the scenario, the supply chain management of the al Baik food store can employ
various alternative supply strategies to reduce on shipment holding cost expenditures.
