Meiosis

Meiosis is a cell division process that is useful in the production of gametes, reproductive
cells (Yanagida, 2014). In meiosis 4 haploid cells, the entire process results in the formation of 4
cells from the parent cell (Preece & Wilson, 2010). In human beings, the haploid cells that result
from meiosis are the sperm cells and the egg cells. When the two reproductive cells from meiosis
combine during sexual reproduction, they form a complete cell with complete chromosome
count. Therefore, during reproduction, the haploid cells combine and the result is a single diploid
cell. Meiosis is similar to mitosis in several ways with the distinction that in meiosis, the sister
chromatids of the duplicated chromosomes have to be separated as well as the homologous
chromosomes, which adds complexity to the meiotic cycle (Khan Academy, 2016).
Due to the aforementioned complexity, meiosis happens in two distinct cycles referred to
as meiosis I and meiosis II. In the first round of meiosis, the homologous pairs are separated
while in the second round, the sister chromatids are pulled apart. In each cycle of division, the
cells go through four distinct stages from prophase to telophase, with metaphase and anaphase in
between. One cell in meiosis is capable of producing four gametes. However, before the cell
starts dividing, it enters a prepar...
