The US is widely considered as one of the most democratic nations around the world.
Every citizen has a set of rights as per the nation’s constitution. However, these rights change
from time to time based on the many amendments that the US Constitution undergoes from
time to time. One of the basic rights that citizens can exercise freely is the right to vote. While
authors such as Purtie (2013) argues that the US has among the best voting rights in the world
that provide for equality among all citizens, I disagree with some of these arguments as I
believe that the US is still on the journey towards achieving a perfect democracy status when
it comes to voting. In this paper, I will discuss the rights of voting from a personal perspective
while referring to various resources so as to justify these opinions.
The US Constitution requires that all citizens are granted the right to vote in their
leaders at the local, state, and national levels. The same constitution prohibits any form of
discrimination on the basis of gender, race, skin color, ethnicity, and age – provided that an
