America in the World 1619 or 1776? In a three-to-five page typewritten double-spaced paper (using Times New Roman 12 point font with one-inch margins on all four sides), answer the question of whether 1619 or 1776 works best as the true founding date of America. The 1619 Project contends that the most important aspect of American history is slavery and its descendent, the ongoing racial discrimination pervading American society in the 155 years since the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution. According to the 1619 Project, systemic racism is the nation’s foremost problem today. By contrast, the Commission on Unalienable Rights contends that 1776 is when America really began. The commission argues that while slavery and racism play a significant role in the American story, an even more important part is Thomas Jefferson’s claim that “all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” According to the 1776 school of thought, we cannot deny the horrible abuses in the American past; however, America also has the ability to correct its shortcomings and, in the long run, provide greater opportunity for all. In light of the material we have studied in the last four-to-five weeks, answer the following two-part question. “Using materials from this class that we have discussed since the first major essay, Question 1: explain why 1619 or 1776 is America’s true founding date. Considering your answer to the first part of the question, Question 2: explain whether you think American race relations and racial justice ten years from now will be better, worse, or the same as they currently are. The best way to tackle this question is to review the PowerPoints, the assigned readings and videos, and your notes from class discussion. When you stack up the evidence on both sides of this debate, which side has the stronger case? Compare the two sides of the debate and make it clear as to why one side is more persuasive than the other. You may include evidence from reputable sources outside of this class as long as you cite at least three sources assigned in this class. Once you have explained which date is best, you can use sources from class, sources from outside of class, and, if you wish, your own experiences to explain why you think things will get better, worse, or stay the same. In doing your analysis, you need to take the long view. Be sure to discuss all three main characters from The Warmth of Other Suns. Consider using the 1619 and 1776 sources and the movie 13th. You do not need to cite PowerPoints, but if you use any of the written and video sources that I provided, you need to cite them both in-text and in a list of works cited. Be sure to use page numbers with your in-text citations (when they are available) and to alphabetize your list of works cited. (Do not factor in “a,” “an,” and “the” when alphabetizing.) You only need to use materials listed below, all of which are related to this course. However, you may use additional reputable sources as long as you use at least three sources from class.
