Describe Ayatollah Khomeini and the connection to anti-western beliefs
Ayatollah Khomeini was born in 1902 in Khomeyn, Iran. He played a significant role in
establishing the Islamic Republic of Iran through an ideology that is popularly known as
Khomeinism. His political, economic, and religious ideas were vital in galvanizing the 1979
Iranian Revolution that led to the replacement of the millennia-old monarchy. Khomeini argued
that Islamic jurists were supreme and were custodians of religious and political authority that
must be obeyed as an expression of obeying God. Equally, their precedencies were above
secondary ordinances. Ayatollah Khomeini ideologies have had an enormous impact outside
Iran, especially in Shia populations throughout the world. He is considered an image of Islam.
His doctrines created fear and distrust towards Islam, mainly because of his strong anti-western
beliefs. Khomeini’s ideas have greatly influenced the West and the Western popular culture as he
restricted its entry in the Muslim world.

The Middle East faces many challenges, for example, authoritarianism, terrorism and extremism,
corruption, foreign intervention, civil war, and sectarianism. All these concerns are pegged on
religion and religiosity, which remains the most significant concern among Arabs of the Middle
East. The geopolitical problems in the Middle East require an inward outlook to address the local
matters effectively. There are various military campaigns in different regions in the Middle East,
such as in Yemen, the Islamic State, and Saudi-Iranian tensions. There is no agreeable form of
governance as ideologies like liberalized democracy are marred by corruption. Equally,
authoritarian systems have led to high levels of oppression, whereby citizens are exposed to a
