Answer the following questions using the simulator tabs.
Bar Magnet
1. How does the simulation indicate which direction the magnetic field points?
The field diagram arrows have the white end pointing to the North Pole and the red end
pointing to the South Pole.
2. What happens to the compass when you click “Flip Polarity?”
All the field diagram arrows switch their polarity but none of the magnitudes change.
3. Click “Show Field Meter.” Using the magnetic field strength “B,” compare the
strength of the field at the poles and at the side of the magnet. Which is larger?
The magnetic field strength is much stronger at the poles of the magnet as compared to
the poles. The field strength is the same at both ends of the poles.
Pickup Coil
1. How can you make the lightbulb light up?
The bulb lights up when the magnet is moved in the coil. It turns off when the magnet is
not moving.
2. What happens to the direction of the current when you move the magnet back and
forth?
The current moves down when the north end of the magnet is moving in the coil and the
current moves up when the south end of the magnet is in the coil.
3. Click on the voltage indicator. What happens as you move the magnet from the
left of the coil to the right?
The voltage meter moves to the left when the north end of the magnet is in the coil and
moves to the right when the south end of the magnet is in the coil.
