OLIVER TWIST 2
A. Thesis
Dunovska’s article, The Women in Charles Dickens’s novel Oliver Twist, presents the
experiences of the Women in Oliver Twist. Dicken wrote the story during the Victorian era,
where women were prejudiced and had different gender roles. They were supposed to remain at
home performing domestic duties, sexually pure and capable of practicing self-practice. The
thesis of the article is the victimization of women by society because of their social status,
sexuality, and position in the society (Dunovska, 2010).
B. Major Points
Dunovska (2010) uses three main female characters, Nancy, Rose, and Agnes, from the story to
explain how social status, sexuality, and position in the society led to victimization and ridicule.
Agnes, the mother of Oliver Twist, is said to be erring and weak because of being unwedded and
pregnant. In contrast to men, she is said to have an incomplete name and does not follow the
moral codes of Victorian society by staying out of sexual activities without a husband. She
develops guilt and dies of shame. Nancy is victimized for being a mistress and prostitute who
would not be approved by the Victorian society. She belongs to the lowest social class of
workers. They are both referred to as fallen women. In contrast, Rose is said to be an angel
because she is innocent and pure.
C. Method of Development
The author relies on textual evidence by referring to the text through quotes. In the analysis, the
author incorporates feminism as a critical perspective of describing how women were oppressed
and victimized. This is through the differentiated roles and biases concerning behavior.
D Effectiveness of Persuasion using Thesis
