Osteoporosis
Name of disease
Osteoporosis
History of the disease.
It was estimated that about 200 million people worldwide have osteoporosis. For
instance, 54 million people are estimated to have it in us. Even though osteoporosis occurs
irrespective of whether you are a woman or a man, statistics show that women are four times
more likely to get it than men (Sözen, 2017). In us, around 2 million men have osteoporosis,
and 12 million more are at high risk of developing it. Predictive statistics models estimated
that after surpassing age 50, one in four men and one in two women would develop fractures
related to osteoporosis in their lifetimes. Another 30% were reported to be at high risk of
developing osteoporosis due to low bone density. This condition is called osteopenia. Each
year, it is estimated that osteoporosis is responsible for over 2 million fractures, and this
number is on the rise (Topics, 2021).
Description of disease
Osteoporosis is a cellular metabolic disease that causes the bones to thin and weaken.
This disease usually develops without any form of pain or symptoms. It is not discovered
until the thinned and weekend bones painfully fractures. Most of the fractures occur in the
wrist, spine, and hip. The best way to test check the health of your bone is by bone mineral
density test. Anybody can develop osteoporosis, though older women are at high risk. Risk
factors include:
Old age
Having a small and thin body
Through hereditary
Through using certain medicines
Being Asian or white woman
Having a low bone density
To ensure you have healthy and strong bones, consider eating foods rich in vitamin D,
calcium, avoid smoking, and exercise regularly. In some instances, medicine can help. Lastly,
avoid falling since falls are the number one cause of fracture in older people (Sözen, 2017).
