Introduction
Sleep is a necessary biological process among human beings. Biologically, sleep is broken
down into two phases: - Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM)
(Kelly et al., 2018). The different sleep phases are essential in making a sleep cycle. Many sleep
disorders such as narcolepsy, sleepwalking, and night terrors affect different parts of the night's
sleep. Also, research demonstrates the various cognitive functions and overall health effects related
to sleep deprivation. Various treatments, including sleep hygiene and pharmacological approaches,
such as sleeping pills, are used to manage the disorders. The essay will discuss NREM and REM
sleep phases, the effect of sleep deprivation, and sleep hygiene. It will also discuss how sleeping
pills interact with the brain regions and narcolepsy and its treatment.
The stages of NREM sleep describe how clinicians identify its different stages.
NREM describes a classification of two types of sleep. It is characterized by four stages,
including N1, N2, N3, and N4. Clinicians use electroencephalographic (EEG) findings that trace
the electrical patterns of brain activity to identify different stages of NREM (Shen et al., 2019).
The EEG is a test that records electrical signals of the brain using electrodes attached to an
individual scrap (Kelly et al., 2018). The electrodes detect electrical charges caused by brain cells'
activity. These charges are amplified and may appear as a recording or a graph projected on a
computer screen, where clinicians interpret the readings.
Using the EEG, the different characteristics of the NREM stages are interpreted and
recorded. The characteristics of stage 1 include an initial cycle that lasts between one and seven
minutes and is easily disrupted by noise (Shen et al., 2019). The brain activity transitions are
grouped into mixed-frequency waves and wakefulness to low-voltage. The EEG findings show
that stage two lasts from 10 to 25 minutes within the initial cycle and increases every successive
