PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF PCOS, PID, AND SYPHILIS 2
Pathophysiology of PCOS, PID, and Syphilis
Question 1
The pathogenesis of PCOS entails primary defects within the hypothalamic- insulin
action and secretion, pituitary axis, and ovarian function. Although the exact cause of PCOS
remains unclear, PCOS is associated with obesity and ovarian resistance (Ndefo et al., 2013).
This association is not entirely abnormal. Insulin is responsible for regulating ovarian function.
Ovaries usually respond to enhanced insulin secretion by producing androgens that lead to
anovulation.
Question 2
PCOS increases the risk of infertility among women. Although the disease is treatable,
PCOS increases the rate of infertility among women. Women with PCOS suffer hormonal
imbalances that eventually interfere with the production and growth of eggs from the ovaries.
PCOS is responsible for 70-80% of infertility among women (Melo et al., 2015). The American
Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends the evaluation of women who regularly attempt
and fail to get pregnant within six months. The evaluation should focus on the presence of PCOS
or other infertility-related conditions.
Question 3
The pathophysiology of PID involves a growing infection of the cervicovaginal
microorganisms, with the most important pathogen being Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria
