WORK AND ORGANISATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY WITHIN THE HR CONTEXT 2
Question 3: Relationships in the Workplace
Relationships in the workplace facilitate interactions among colleagues within a similar
working environment. Through these relationships, colleagues communicate, share and establish
good networks that help them grow career-wise and in their personal lives. As a result, there are
different types of relationships within the workplace. They are; linear, staff, functional, matrix,
personal and external relationships. Linear, staff, functional, matrix, and external relationships can
be classified as professional relationships. The organizational structure and culture play a vital role
in shaping relationships within the organization. The relationships enhance teamwork,
collaboration, morale among the employees, increase productivity, and higher employee retention
rates. They are characterized by the main features of voluntary, informal, and socio-emotional
goals. However, due to these relationships, they have been dysfunctional behavior in the
workplace.
Some of the dysfunctional behaviors in the workplace include bullying and sexual
harassment. Workplace bullying refers to progressive intimidating and offensive behavior towards
an individual. Bullying affects the confidence and self-esteem of the individual being bullied.
According to the dark triad model, different personality traits facilitate bullying; narcissism,
Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Narcissistic individuals are selfish, arrogant, lack empathy,
and boastful. Machiavellianism is associated with self-interest, manipulation, and a lack of
morality and emotions. At the same time, psychopathy's trait is associated with a lack of empathy,
antisocial behavior, and manipulation. Individuals with these personality traits are likely to bully
individuals based on the perception of the personality traits. Bullies behave negatively by ignoring
opinions from their employees, withholding information, and exposing individuals to derogation
and high workloads.
