Questions On Pgs. 148-149.
From a radical feminist perspective, patriarchal factors in society shaped Sonia's path to
prison. According to Saulnier (2000), the experiences of women are rooted in imbalances in
gender, which are perpetuated by the patriarchy. Saulnier (2000) posits that Sonia's role in
society is sex-based, and her complicity with her abuse is based on the conditioning that women
exist to serve men. From the radical feminist perspective, Sonia's role as the second parent to her
brother is conditioned by the patriarchy. Her susceptibility to the older male can be attributed to
the notion of patriarchy. The sexual abuse of women, as Saulnier (2000) maintains, is due to the
limited roles that Sonia was assigned to in life that resulted in her psychological issues and
eventually sex-based oppression. Her subservience to her abuser, as Saulnier (2000) shows, is
due to the sex-role conditioning from society.
Sonia's commitment to prison is an opportunity to address key needs in her life. A radical
feminist would posit that to help Sonia, the most basic institutions she interacts with need to
change. First, Sonia's child responsibilities should not be an individual responsibility. Sonia's
interaction with a patriarchal society has conditioned her to an inferior role, and Saulnier (2000)
suggests empowerment. Radical feminists encourage that to address women's problems; the
focus should be on raising consciousness about how personal issues are related to larger societal
