Study. Psicothema, Vol. 34, No. 1, 66-73 doi: 10.7334/psicothema2021.290
The article “The Psychological Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain: A Longitudinal
Study” authored by Berta Ausín, Clara González-Sanguino, Miguel Ángel Castellanos, Jesús
Sáiz, Sara Zamorano, Carlos Vaquero, and Manuel Muñoz assesses the longitudinal impact of
covid 19 pandemic on the Spanish population. Ausin et al., starts by stating the WHO global
analysis on the infection rates of the pandemic and thus showing the magnitude of the pandemic.
Some of the identified mental health effects of the confinements during the pandemic to be
anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. Ausin et al., conducted this assessment in a four
step process. The first was a two weeks study of population’s response to confinement, a month
assessment, two months and a year after the assessment. Through these phases, a study was
conducted and inferences taken for analytical purposes. Ausin et al., concluded that the pandemic
had significant negative impacts on the mental health and these effects continue to persist as time
went by. The assessments recommendations include specialized treatment or mental health
patients and thus averting the long run adverse effects that the pandemic has on the population.
