Choose and describe a scientific technique or practice related to genetics and eugenics.
Provide the rationale behind the use of this technique or practice.
Ideally, eugenics continued to flourish between 1905 to 1935. This was hoped to
enhance hereditary characteristics via voluntary and selective breeding (Pence, 2010). In
contemporary society, eugenics employs genetics to enhance the global human population. In
this regard, the scientific technique related to both eugenics and genetics is stem cell research.
Ideally, stem cells are blank or undifferentiated cells, and they can develop into cells that serve
multiple functions in various body parts. The various types of stem cells include embryonic
stem cells, non-embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, amniotic fluid stem cells
and cord blood stem cells (Mahla, 2016). This technique can be used for different reasons.
Firstly, the stem cell research technique is used to increase the understanding of the occurrence
of diseases. Stem cell research, per se, can be used to develop regenerative medicine and
provide cures for diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes and spinal cord degeneration, among
others.
Discuss your thoughts and ideas regarding the technique or practice. Is it ever justifiable? Why
or why not?
The stem cell technique is incredibly helpful and justifiable. It is justifiable as it can
help establish a cure for various diseases that remain incurable. The stem cells have such a
huge potential to create regenerative medicine, which can repair and regenerate damaged or
diseased tissues in the human body (Pence, 2010). Scientists and researchers can use the stem
cell technique to test new drugs for effectiveness and safety, which will have a massive
implication on drug development.
