Title
Engrossed in conversation: The impact of cell phones on simulated driving
performance
Population
36 undergraduate students
Primary
Question/
Hypothesis
Talking on the phone while driving increases the likelihood of having an
accident
Method/Task
In a within-subject design, participants completed a driving history
questionnaire and four simulated driving scenarios. The distraction tasks
consisted of responding to a signal detection task and engaging in a
simulated cell phone conversation
Variables
Measured and
Manipulated
DV: Driving performance - traffic violations, driving maintenance, attention
lapses, and response time
IV: cognitively distracting tasks signal detection task, telephone
conversation task
Results
(those that
address the
hypothesis)
When talking on the phone, participants committed more traffic violations,
drove a bit faster as compared to when not on the phone, committed an
increased number of attention lapses, and took longer to begin driving after
arriving at a stop sign
Implications
Talking on the phone while driving (or generally using the phone while
driving) increases the chances of having an accident and/or engaging in
traffic violations
What still
needs to be
addressed?
(What did the
authors
mention? What
questions
occurred to
you?)
The authors underline the need for more research on distracted driving with
emphasis placed on the effects of varying conditions. They suggest the need
of exploring the effects of varying time-on-task, driving environment and
stimulation level, and conversation types on dual-task driving performance.
Can the current study be generalized? What other forms of distraction affect
effective driving? Does engaging in in-person conversations with a
passenger(s) cause similar effects?
