The integration of I/O psychology-based approaches in the workplace has significant
impacts on employee morale and motivation. Indeed, these approaches can enhance workplace
productivity through a focus on the mental and physical health of employees. One of the most
commonly used approach emails the integration of fun and humor in meetings as noted in
Lehmann-Willenbrock and Allen (2014). In essence, humor contributes to increased productivity
through its influence on job satisfaction and workgroup cohesion among teams. In using such
strategies, leaders exploit the influence of environmental factors on employee motivation levels.
For instance, the value of work and life balance among employees is significant in affecting their
motivation in the workplace (Mesmer-Magnus, Glew, and Viswesvaran, 2012). Besides, external
factors such as working conditions and job security could influence motivation through feelings
of appreciation and mutual respect in the course of work.
While initiatives aimed at enhancing workforce motivation are diverse and varied, some
face resistance from employees. In one of my former workplaces, the management passed a
policy that provided private space for breastfeeding workers to nurse their infants while at the
workplace. While the initiative was significant in enhancing overall levels of satisfaction,
especially among female workers, it faced significant resistance at the beginning. In particular,
workers would complain because of the potential for disruptions during working hours.
Moreover, the resistance to this change emerged from concerns over the abuse of such spaces by
workers who were unwilling to engage in normal work. The failure by leaders to communicate
changes to employees often increases the prospect of resistance. As noted in Hon, Bloom, and
Crant (2014), leaders in modern organizations should engage in collaborative decision-making to
ensure that employees feel part of strategic decisions.
