Introduction
One of the devastating natural disasters that Orlando, Florida, has ever experienced is
Hurricane Frances. The hurricane occurred in 2005, becoming the third major hurricane, the
most intense, and the deadliest disaster in Orlando's history. NOAA argues that the hurricane
originated as a tropical depression caused a tropical depression that intensified into a storm and
moved westwards, forming a hurricane. It then rapidly intensified into category five hurricane
hitting Orlando (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2016).
How Hurricane Frances Impacted Orlando Community
The Orlando community suffered damages amounting to $5 billion from Hurricane
Frances in the hurricane also resulted in 7 direct fatalities and 43 additional fatalities that were
indirectly associated with the hurricane (Hurricane Frances, 2004). The hurricane also led to the
closure of the Orlando theme park, displacement of families, and destruction of transports
infrastructures. Many buildings and structures were submerged, and numerous sewerages and
water systems were destroyed. The hurricane also destroyed drainage systems, leading to health
hazards among the residents of Orlando, Florida (Li et al, 2007).
Over $30 million was spent in the repair of over 900 homes that were destroyed by the
hurricane while $44 million was used to provide social assistance. Electricity and water
connection were lost in over 95,000 consumers, and additional 600,000 cubic yards of branches
and trees were destroyed. The deteriorating condition forced over 23,000 people to the temporary
rescue shelters.
