Case Problem
The problem Sambian Partners is currently facing is a high attrition rate. Although the
company has prided itself on being a great place to work, talented employees leave for
competitors, and management does not know why. Mary Donillo, the head of human resources,
had tried to interview the employees who were leaving to find out the reason, but no one seemed
to give a straight answer. The results acquired from other employees through a survey are also
not futile. Generally, most employees seem unhappy at Sambian but never say anything about it.
Managers also fail to notice this unhappiness, and when the employees finally speak up, it is too
late to convince them to stay. Therefore, employees will continue to leave for better
opportunities until the management gets to the root of the problem.
Issues in the Case
One of the human capital management (HCM) issues contributing to the problem is
catering to a multigenerational workforce. Sambian fails to recognize that each employee has a
different background and work habits. As a result, it does not cater to their individual needs. For
example, unlike other younger single employees in the company, Tom has two kids at home,
meaning his needs are different.
Lack of an open-door policy is another HCM issue contributing to the high attrition rate.
At Sambian, employees are afraid to speak freely about their issues and concerns. As mentioned
earlier, most employees are unhappy but never say anything. As a result, they choose to suffer in
silence, which is not healthy. They often raise their concerns when they have decided to quit.
Without an open-door policy, a company will never understand the problems facing its
employees.
