Introduction
Diversity in an organization is where there are differences in the population that are
represented by differences in gender, age, ethnic backgrounds, and disability among others.
Organizational culture is the principles, values, experiences, and environment in an organization
that determines the behavior of individuals. Some characteristics make up a strong organizational
culture vis-à-vis the diversity constitution of an organization.
Discussion
With the growth in globalization, many organizations are having to adapt to better ways
of dealing with diversity issues. The traditional approach has been the expectation that the
minority group has to adapt to a culture influenced by the majority groups (Amaram, 2007).
However, change is being necessitated by various influences including social justice and legal
obligations. There is also the economic pressure to acquire and maintain a competitive advantage
in the global context. This has led to a modern approach to dealing with diversity by leading new
organizational cultures that are stronger. The downside of diversity is the increased tendency for
individuals to engage in interpersonal conflict in the organization (Martin, 2014). This conflict is
brought about by differences in opinion, thought-processes, values, trends, and traditions
(Martin, 2014). These differences can be used to build a strong organizational culture.
A strong organizational culture that has considerations for diversity is made up of several
characteristics. To begin with, there has to be fairness orientation in the organization. This places
emphasis on people with a focus on treating people with respect and dignity. Additionally,
