Introduction
African-Americans have not had a comfortable life in the United States, especially those
who were born in the segregation period. Their understanding of education was not similar to the
modern world when many opportunities would make the difference for these people from a
different timeline. Washington and Dubois are among the intellects that had different views
when it came to education for the African-American community. The following paper argues on
the educational disagreement between Dubois and Washington.
Both Washington and Dubois had an obligation to ensure that they uplift the African-
American community after the civil war. The two individuals had different backgrounds with
Washington spending most of his early childhood in slavery and Dubois, on the other hand, grew
up in a predominated white environment attended university and was also able to become the
first African-American to receive a doctorate from Harvard University ("Black Education -
Washington and DuBois," 2020). These are some of the concepts that led to disagreement with
their understanding of education for the African-American community.
Despite that, they had similar approaches towards education, and both wanted to uplift
the African-American community, they were still opposed when it came to black suffrage.
According to Dubois, agitation was necessary for the ballot box, which meant that the right to
vote would only be given to the educated people and it would only result to economic gain when
political power would safeguard the African-American community ("Black Education -
Washington and DuBois," 2020). The approach of Washington, on the other hand, aimed at
making African-Americans not only property owners but also businessmen, which would only be
