ABOLISH ICE 2
Introduction
The article, “Abolish ICE! Fighting for Humanity over Profit in Immigration Policy,”
gives insights on Immigration and Customs Enforcement, its impact on the immigrant
communities, and the dangers of its continued enforcement. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) is a government institution that deals with the matters of customs and
immigration. In the recent past, the body has been in the spotlight of gross violation of human
rights, separation of families through incarceration of immigrants, as well as other crimes against
humanity. Abolish ICE, therefore, provides checks and balances on the institution with only one
aim, abolishing it. Abolish ICE believes that no reform can be made on a body that is created
principally to criminalize immigrants. This paper will seek to substantiate the move by Abolish
ICE on why it should be shut down as its continued operation diminishes the international law on
human rights as well as the provisions of the American constitution.
Adverse Impact of ICE
ICE has for the past 20 years been a tormenting den for immigrants who are thought to in
the American soil illegally. With extensive violations of human rights, ICE has been accused of
nurturing a culture of radicalization and profiling of immigrants. The culture has led to increased
violence, use of force, and application of blatantly illegal methods during arrests. ICE has
widened its net by its anti-immigrant rhetoric topped-up with racist motives. The image that most
immigrants have of ICE in their minds is an institution powered by “white supremacists” to run
the agenda of racial discrimination (Nelson, 2019). Abolish ICE believes that an institution that
has been on the headlines for the wrong reasons like ICE should not be allowed to continue with
its operations.
