CO-OPERATIVE MODEL OF WORKPLACE OWNERSHIP 2
I support the co-operative model of workplace ownership and management. This model is
essential in the economy of a country. It promotes the active participation of workers in the
business. Employees in co-operative actively take part in the management of the business,
controlling the activities, and sharing of profits.
There are a lot of benefits of the co-operative model. One is that the model is based on the
membership, as stated by Browell (2000). Co-operatives are run by a group of members, and
everything is done for the benefit of the members who can get financial support and help whenever.
It is also advantageous to the community as it gives back to society.
Another benefit of the co-operative model is that it gives a chance to workers who are
unable to own their businesses to have one. This is possible because members come together to
form a corporation. Employees hold their jobs and can outline their terms and condition. Workers
also run the job according to their technical know-how.
As stated by Klare (1988), the Co-operative model avails jobs to the economy. More
employment opportunities are made possible in the community due to a stable economy. The right
working conditions are also enhanced by the co-operative model. It created wealth for the people
through the salaries of the workers. It increases the per capita income of the people, which
improves the standard of living in the country.
With all these benefits, the co-operative model has its cons too. According to Ridley‐Duff
(2009), the members are sometimes reluctant to pay their membership contributions. Without this,
the company lacks the availability of skilled managers to run the co-operative. This leads to under-
performance of the business.
