DQ 1 How might social psychology be influenced by cultural factors from one society to
another? Provide an example.
Social psychology is simply the study of how people's thoughts and behaviors are
influenced by those around them in actuality or in imagination. By this I mean that a
person is, and can be, affected by someone who is present in front of them just as
much as the thought of that person had they been absent. Typically social psychology
turns toward the environment and the motivation that persuades the influence on
behavior, but from culture to culture these types of aspects alter. For example someone
from the south is more likely to be old fashioned and have an accent that is much
different from someone who is from the north and might immediately butt heads about
their residential pride. Sometimes without even realizing it we succumb to social
influence through many aspects but a seemingly outstanding one is culture. First
impressions are last impressions and I believe that is where the cultural factors come
into play. The differences are vast and diverse as well. In most middle eastern countries
women are veiled and sheltered to not be seen or heard, where as the in the United
States women walk around day by day dressing however they desire. Had someone
from one of those middle eastern countries come to America to see what the females in
the United States where, that individual might be disgusted and disagree completely.
Then the individual is approached by a female with common conversation who is
dressed simply, in a polo t-shirt and blue jeans as she strolls through the city. The way
this individual will behave has many factors the way she is dressed, the type of
personality he possess, the tone of which she speaks in, and many others. Different
cultures influence social psychology significantly.
Response 2
Social psychology is essentially how individuals act and react in social situations.
Cultural factors within society affect social psychology because acceptable behaviors
differentiate among cultures. In order to know if an individual's behavior changes in a
social situation it be known how they act in everyday life.
Western cultures tend to be competitive in most situations. Schools thrive on
competition of students to be the best. A child in school is the hero of the team if they
dominate a game, and are seen as being responsible for winning. In many Asian
cultures competition is frowned upon. If a team wins no single member of the team is
seen as being the best, and a member of a team trying to do more than the other
members would be shameful to the team. These differences in behavior are the reason
social psychology is influenced by culture.

Response 3
Every culture has differing morals, values and perceptions which influence social
psychology. Just like multiple intelligence is influenced by culture, social psychology is
also influenced by culture. For example, western society puts more bearing on self and
making oneself happy and thriving in society. Much emphasis is placed on our
education level and salary in determining whether or not we are successful and whether
others view us as successful, valued members of society. In other cultures, more
emphasis is placed on the community and the family and doing what is best for your
family without regard for your own happiness. In some cultures, if you have success
and money and do not share it with the family it is frowned upon. Another example
would be love and marriage. In western society, marriage is about choosing our partner
for our own self and happiness and many marriages end in divorce if they are not
happy. In other cultures, there are still arranged marriages and they have no choice of
their partner and divorce is not an option. In the Chinese culture, while it is not an
arranged marriage, they are expected to consider their obligation to the their family
when choosing a partner.
Response 4
According to psychology today, social psychology is a discipline that uses scientific
methods "to understand and explain how the thought, feeling and behavior of
individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of other human
beings. This can be for an example of someone that has lived in California all of their
lives and then move to a small town in Missouri and look at the way people are
perceived and can be perceived. There might be a wide variety of people in a big city of
California that are gay or lesbian and then that person that comes to Missouri and
doesnýt see any gays or lesbians might think that there might be some prejudice in that
small town because of the way people were raised to look at the world in one town to
another. There are many things that may be differant in the mind set of lets say a
person from a small town and a person from a big city. There may not be any other
nationality that this person sees in a daily basis in the small town but in the big town
they may be used to seeing differant cultures come alive all over. This can also mean
someone that lives in a small town in Missouri might be a little bit more patient than lets
say a person from a big city in New York.
