With the rise of insecurity cases in the United States, both in private and public
environments, the people of the United States have become increasingly worried about their
security. One such individual is David French, who is a senior writer at the National Review and
a veteran of the Iraq War, who wrote the article called, What Critics Don't Understand about
Gun Culture.” The article was published in 2018 in The Atlantic, where the author argues how
the country is divided, deciding on the matter of gun ownership by the ordinary people.
However, French highlights that individuals who have experienced traumatic events such as
home invasion, robbery, and even kidnapping should be in a better possession to highlight the
need and importance of gun ownership among the community members. David French builds his
credibility by describing his personal experience, where an unknown individual attacked his wife
and kids at home, but his main intention was to find David French. French also cites other
credible sources in his article and successfully employs emotional appeals; however, towards the
end of the article, he fails to appeal to the reader’s emotions, which ends up weakening his
credibility and his argument.
In his article, French begins his article by laying a foundation by describing his personal
experience with an attacker. He explains that the man pulled partially in their driveway and
walked up to his three kids who were playing on their trampoline. The man was carrying a gun,
as can be indicated by the empty holster on his belt. While the man did not shoot at anyone in the
house, he demanded they enter the house, so as to get out of the public. Inside the house, he then
demanded to see the husband, where he was told that he had not arrived yet. The ordeal ended on
a positive note since the attacker left after the wife cleverly defused the confrontation. In this part
