Multimedia Presentation & Reflection
We are always confronted with complicated communication issues and challenges. It is therefore
important to understand how communication works. This helps us make sense pressing
challenges and solve them. Communication competence allows one to be a more mindful
communicator. Competent communicators have cognitive knowledge about communication.
This ability is attained through observations and instruction. One should understand the social,
and cultural contexts that affect competence and be able to adapt accordingly.
As a student, the schools environment serves as my work place.
Since the school community is comprised of many student and many stakeholders,
communication is a vital aspect.
There are many instances that happen in the school environment many which require
communication competence to handle.
Students relations are majorly shaped by verbal Interpersonal communication.
Communication competence can help students learn effectively and appropriately handle
challenging communication situations.
Cognitive dissonance theory in resolve communication problems
Cognitive dissonance theory is a theory of consistency and can be used to resolve
communication challenges.
This means a class of theories that explain people's striving for freedom from
contradictions.
Cognitions are all desires, assumptions, knowledge, memories, perceived own behavior,
and the perceived consequences in a workplace.
If the dissonance is strong enough, combating it can permanently change attitudes and
behavior.
This theory applies in every context where humans relate and work.
In dissonance resolution, a distinction can be made between direct and indirect strategies.
Direct strategies helps resolve the discrepancy between behavior and attitude responsible
for dissonance.

What I learnt from this investigation about communication in the workplace
I understand how I can communicate both effectively and appropriately such that I will
get the desired result and not offend the other parties.
Interpersonal communications among peer groups of the same horizontal level are always
a problem for people.
I also learnt of the various theories of communication and learnt how I can apply them in
real life communication context.
I learnt that some ideas about communication are based on the assumption that
communication is only possible if there is a common set of characters, the same language
and a comparable socialization of the communication participants.
People find tensions of all kinds to be uncomfortable, combined with the need to release
this tension.
What I learnt about my communication skills and style
I have learnt that my communication skills have developed but there is still rom for
improvement.
When I make decision, they may not always be the best although the alternatives are also
attractive;
With communication competence, I can relate well with my fellow students in school.
When I become aware that something I said becomes offensive than I expected, I should
take remedy.
I act contrary to my beliefs without any external justification (benefit/reward or
cost/punishment).
I do not like confrontations with anyone and am a quiet student in class barely saying a
word to anyone besides my best friends.
What I learnt from this investigation about communication in the workplace
With the knowledge I have on the cognitive dissonance theory, I can be able to
understand hoe to make my communication effective.
I still need to improve on my interpersonal communication aspect.
