Introduction
The following paper discusses the challenges with implementing total quality
management concepts in strategy, planning, operations and delivery. The paper discusses the
need for application of these practices covering various aspects of health care delivery and also
the stakeholders that need to be involved for the practices to be adopted and institutionalized.
The paper also discusses the existing approaches that are being used in the industry for
implementing total quality management practices and the outcomes that are being witnessed. The
paper attempts to align this with patient outcomes that are being witnessed in the industry. It is
well known that for implementing total quality management, there needs to be an integrated
approach across the different components and this paper discusses the challenges with the same.
There are also recommendations made on how the challenges in implementing total quality
management practices across the industry can be overcome.
Total quality management (TQM) is a body of best practices that focuses on reduction of
waste within any operational activity. For this to be successfully implemented there needs to be
support from the executive leadership for making the investments into trainings, processes and
systems to support the implementation and continue with the same operationally. They leadership
needs to mentor the management to overcome the operational hurdles and manage the change
seamlessly without disrupting the implementation. In the healthcare industry, implementing
TQM practices will span multiple entities, stakeholders and geographies having different
