Why do some people claim that cable has a greater bandwidth potential than wireless?
People say that because it is a correct statement. While wireless technology has improved over the
years, it has nowhere near the capacity of cable. This is because of the actual make up of the two
different infrastructures. Cable is made of copper, except fiber which is glass. Copper is the best
conduit in the world except for silver. It is great for transferring digital traffic across networks.
There are two different types of wireless commonly referred to in my opinion: cellular and
wifi. Both use radio frequencies to carry data across the network. Cellular is much slower because
of two things. The frequency is around 900mHz which carries less data than higher frequencies
employed in wifi. Second, the data has to be transmitted to a tower or several towers covering a
large amount of distance before reaching a calling center that puts the signal onto cables. Wifi is
much faster due to the higher frequencies and the short hop to a router, then usually a modem and
onto the network using cables.
Wireless is great for checking email and surfing the web, but when large amounts of data need to be
sent, cable is much faster.
