Effects of COVID-19 on sports
The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted almost everything across the world. It has led to a
public health emergency as a result of the deaths of thousands of people and plunged the world
economy into a downturn. The International Monetary Fund has already warned that this could
be the most severe downswing since the Great Depression. The pandemic has affected all
industries, not sparing the sports sector. It has upended the sporting calendar, causing
professional leagues in various parts of the world to suspend their activities to slow the spread of
the illness. Even the Summer Olympics, which is one the most-watched sporting broadcast in the
world, got pushed back a year.
The disruption has affected how people interact as well. Public gatherings are no longer
encouraged; hence, public recreational events will no longer take place until further notice.
Indoor sports venues, gyms, playgrounds, and cinemas, among other sites where gatherings take
place, have been suspended. This has had a very strong and negative effect on many businesses
in the sports industry. Brick and mortar casinos, for instance, are not allowed to operate in most
parts of the world. As a result, revenue for the casino industry is expected to decline
significantly. Cancellations and delays in public sports activities also mean reduced revenues and
significant costs for sports facilities administrators and operators.
The overall global value of the entire sports industry was approximated to be about $471bn in
2018, with an increase of 45% since 2011. Before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped play, the
trajectory seemed to shoot upwards. Now, all parts of the sporting value chain are experiencing
hardship. From athletes to teams and leagues and the media companies that broadcast and cover
sporting activities are suffering.

The sports industry is trying hard to capitalize on the increase in media consumption by
developing new ways to attract consumers. Without the live games, it is necessary to deepen the
pool of content accessible to fans. For instance, sports broadcasters such as Fox Sports and
ESPN are now showing classic games, documentaries, archived content, and e-sports to keep
sports fans watching. Most of the individual leagues, such as the NFL are also doing the same.
Another approach the industry has taken is to increase the flexibility of the available payment
options for sports content consumers. The Turner Sports, for instance, has eliminated the paywall
for their streaming subscription, League Pass. On the other hand, consumers, such as gamblers,
have mostly shifted to virtual sports betting. Currently, discussions are underway between TV
network partners and sports bodies to find solutions that work for both sides. Some of the
measures already taken include paying broadcasters compensation, which grants them more
rights and extends agreements.
Conclusion
While the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the sports sector adversely, it is still possible to
find ways to adapt. The absence of actual sports games and events presents a greater opportunity
for virtual technologies. Already, sports leagues using e-sports to maintain the interest and sense
of competition during the shutdowns. Furthermore, immersive technologies could be developed
to enable sports fans to experience games live without the need to be physically present. In these
hard times, the industry may have ventured into new territory. Still, with proper strategies, it can
arise from the crisis mush stronger and popular than before.
