The article "Mother Tongue" was written by Amy Tan. Tan was brought up in two
different backgrounds and had difficulties in speaking in English. In this article, a strong
message concerning language has been outlined, and there is an explanation of different related
cultures and stereotypes (Tan, 1990). This leads to the main topic of discussion “effects of
language in personal expression.” Tan gave a description of the relationship between her and her
mother and how it contributed to who she currently is. She stands as an excellent example and
she is able to illustrate the possibility of being successful provided that you decide to bring
change by yourself (Tan, 1990). In her comment, she discourages those who measure people's
intelligent following the ability to speak in English.
The main problems evolve between typecasts and the culture influence (Tan, 1990). The
stereotypes are largely grounded on the basis that people with difficulties in English expertise
have limited skills or capabilities. Through her expression, the writer is profoundly affected by
different stereotypes which include harsh judgment received by her mother from her broken
English which made her expression hard. At some circumstances, the author is forced to
represent her mother on speech giving.
In her work, Tan explained the stereotypes which cause pain to her mother after
identifying that she was unable to speak good English. At some instances, she could wish to be at
her mother's position and speak on her behalf. Self-expression through use of English was a
challenge to her mother which leads to unfair treatment (Tan, 1990). She even admits that during
her tinny age, she used to be ashamed of her mother unable to express her desires. "It always
