SLAVERY 2
1. According to Harriet Jacobs, why is having beauty a curse for enslaved women?
Beauty was a curse because the master was going to be after her. The master was going to be
after then until they gave in and agreed to have sex with them. In a case where they did not give
in, the master was going to force himself on them.
2. Besides being enslaved, what was Nat Turner’s profession? Why did this concern
slave owners?
Nat Turner was a preacher who went to war using the commandments in the Bible. The Slave
owners did not like this because this meant that the slaves would use the Christian doctrine to
justify their slave rebellion.
3. Explain what the term “brutalized” meant to Harriet Jacobs.
Harriet Jacobs used the word brutalized to refer to what happened to the plantation where the
slaves were sent. When the slave was taken to the fields, they were tortured, their heartbroken, as
well as their psyche and they, were no longer themselves again.
4. Who was more likely to run away from slavery? Why were women not as likely to
run away?
Male slaves were more likely to run away, and on the other hand, women were less likely to run
away because of the devotion that they had toward their children. Not all male slaves would run
away, only those that did not have children.
5. Describe how slavery psychologically affected children?
