PANAMA CANAL CASE ANALYSIS 2
Introduction
The Panama Canal is one of the most significant engineering works in the history of
the world. The building of the Canal applied many engineering concepts, which is quite clear
from the beginning where Colonel George Washington was appointed by President Roosevelt
to be the chief engineer of the project back in 1907. Many engineers from the United States
were involved in the Panama Canal to ensure the project came out to be a success as the
president commanded them. The project, which is an engineering marvel, was constructed by
a team that included the Engineers without Borders USA, who worked together in
consultation with the American Society of Civil Engineering. Designing needed proper
consultation and team participation because that is one of the reasons why the French failed
in their 1880 attempt as a result of poor design and a high number of deaths from diseases.
The project needed proper designing and planning, which meant the consulting engineering
aspect was to be given significant priority in the construction process. Below is a picture of a
ship at the third set of locks on the Atlantic side of the Canal.
The Situation Assessment of the Panama Canal Construction
One of the critical issues that the construction team needed to consider was evaluating
the situation they had at hand, which would help the team have complete information about
what was required. One of the facts that needed to be considered is the harsh environment
that would make the construction team vulnerable to different diseases. There was a need to
work on a new design that would incorporate several locks that included a set on the Pacific
entrance to the Canal and another one on the side that the Canal met the Atlantic. During the
