Racism
According to Tatum, racism defined as a scheme that its advantages retrieved from
belonging to a particular racial background (87). From the article, the whites had very many
benefits as compared to black people. They accessed sufficient schools, hospitals, houses, and
transportation systems. Therefore they enjoyed and embraced advantages resulted from racial
practices. The definition termed reasonable because it did not show racism to be one of
oppression people go through but also a system that involves institutional and cultural practices
and policies, actions, and beliefs of people. Its regular operation in America defines how racism
advantages whites and disadvantages blacks (Tatum, 87). The definition of racism has covered
an area of importance whereby, it shows that a particular race is superior to others. For instance,
a black teacher wondered how she would teach with books written by white authors only. She
got a reply that blacks are not authors hence creating a concept of superiority. Also, whites'
accessibility to essential social amenities showed a sense of racial advantages; therefore, I tend to
agree with the definition.
Racism categorized into two forms that show some differences. The active (the image of
racism) and passive racism were the most used forms in America against blacks. The intense
racism involves carrying out blatant and racist actions intentionally, such as racial discrimination
and bigotry. For instance, schools, hospitals, hotels, houses, and other social amenities accessed

separately. The direct abuse of blacks in terms of their skin color and behavior shows segregation
and blatant actions towards them. The passive racism, on the other hand, involves various
scenarios that are indicators of racism. Such situations comprise; laughing and showing collusion
with some racist jokes said by other people. In the process of job recruitments or any other
personal involvement, there is an allowance of exclusionary practices (hiring) and let it go
unchallenged (Tatum, 91). And the avoidance of issues and practices related to race. The two
categories differ as active one shows direct and intentional actions while passive is somehow
indirect, but it is perceived intentionally.
The ethnic identity refers to bringing a sense of ownership resulting from cultural
activities, values, traditions, language, religion, race, and ancestry. Cultural identity, on the other
side, refers to the concept of human beings belonging to a specific group interconnected with
several standard practices of life, such as cultural, social class, and ethnicity (Bécares, 1).
According to Tatum, the ethnic group derives from shared cultural traditions, customs, language,
and history. Therefore ethnic identity is derived from such characteristics (98). Cultural identity
is a sense of belonging to people practicing the same cultural and ethnic practices. Racial identity
derived from belonging to a specific racial group. Therefore, the three terms are used
simultaneously in the article and described as Racial-Ethnical-Cultural identity (REC) as is based
on culture.
The article has created some scenarios that emotionally moved me. In a situation where
an English teacher (who has never read a book written by blacks) tried to express her
disappointment, a white student replied wit racist sentiments. The response she got from a white
male student (in his journal) those black people are not authors indicated a sense of superiority
and inferiority. From the situation, black people are considered less knowledgeable about how to
