Running Header: DANCE AS A CULTURAL PHENOMENON 2
Dance is conceived as a social and cultural phenomenon that has gone through continued
evolution as it responds to man’s historical transformation. Culturally, dance brings action into
thought and different behavior of societies. Dance is a means of cultural activity that is embodied
in a complex and technical framework in specific traditions. Objective dance has always
addressed everyday activities whereas subjective dance is linked to the emotional part to create
different meanings to its audience (Gilbert, 2018).
It is important to realize the basic factors of dance which include choreography, music,
the dancer and elements of decoration. Choreography entails the organization of determined
movements in a specific space where music is the accompanying element highlighting these
movements. The dancer puts into action the movements with due preparation and practice. The
decorative elements strike a difference between dance and other daily activities. It is therefore
easy to understand dance if these factors are presented and the concepts behind them clearly
understood. Having evolved from popular and theatrical form to rhythms of modernity such as
salsa and tango, dance is understood as an essential part of human cultural life (Briginshaw,
2016).
Dance of folkloric nature make use of elements from village costumes which include
masks, embroidery and festive costumes. Theatrical dance on the other hand utilizes elements of
scenography, costume design and lighting in all its performances (Gilbert, 2018). Dance exists in
form of narration that seeks to relieve past moments and proactively represent present reality.
The pre-interest of audiences to pay attention to the artistic manifestation is the basis of theatrical
dance performances.
