RAC AND ITS IMPACTS 2
What impact do you think that RAC programs have on Corporate Compliance Programs?
The Recovery Audit Contractor, RAC, was created in 2003 under the Medicare
Modernization Act. Its main role was to track and recover past unnecessary payments claims made
to health providers by the patients and to caution the MMA so that they can avoid such occurrences
in future. RAC also ensures that the health professionals comply with the set health regulatory
framework. The program aims at promoting dignity and integrity of health providers when dealing
with the patients. RAC oversees how a particular medical case was handled and how the process
of billing the patient was arrived at so that the patient is not overcharged or exploited in any way.
Additionally, RAC also uses complex reviews to identify inefficient healthcare
documentations and coding programs. RAC is devoted to ensure that the correct coding to
represent patients are implemented which are basically the reflection of resources consumed, the
risk of fatality associated with the illness and how less or more severe the situation of the patient
is. Despite CDIs working toward achieving this objective, there have been enormous errors in
accuracy and transparency of coding information provided by the professionals. RAC comes in to
bridge this gap. Patients with private insurance will have some limits under their policies. For
Instance, when another patient uses their insurance details and the bills paid under the legal holder
to the insurance details, then there might arise a crisis when the real insurance holder needs to be
covered but unfortunately their insurance cover is already exhausted by illegitimate holders.
