Question one
The Culture of poverty
The "culture of poverty" gets defined by the argument that poor people engage in certain
practices that are not the same as those of people in 'mainstream' or middle-class city. The
argument further provides that the reason they engage in the said activities is so that they can
survive and adapt to the economic circumstances that are difficult. The various activities that are
implied in this statement that indicates poverty include, having living arrangements that are
multigenerational, engaging in work that is illegal, serial relationships in marriages, households
that are multi-family and pooling of resources among other activities that the book recognizes.
The thesis explains the poverty culture in the US in the sense the highest rate of criminal
activity gets associated with the people living in areas that are poverty-stricken. The difficulty in
getting employment pushes people into engaging in criminal activity in order to acquire the
money that is quick and easy according to the crime bosses in those areas. Most of the crime
gangs have also established their operational bases in poor communities where they can be able
to get easy access to the vulnerable populations that they can recruit into crime like dealing drugs
and robbery. Merlin accounts of when he was in prison in a situation where he used to advise his
fellow inmates against getting involved with women who have children, stating the reason being,
"the daddy will always pop back into her life" (Conley 2017, 375-408) this justifies the thesis
about serial relationships as Merlin was involved with a woman who had children with a
different man. The fact that he was in prison indicates that at some point, he engaged in crime
that led him into prison. Pooling gets proven by the fact that someone would sit someone else's
children in exchange for food, money other factorsa clear explanation of a stricken poverty
culture.
