Intrapersonal Communication, Self-Perception, And Interpersonal Communications
The fundamentals of defining self-esteem and self-concept
The term self-concept can be used to mean a wide array of factors that relate to how
an individual perceives themself. For instance, self-concept can be described as the way one
sees the definition of themselves based on their customs, abilities and nature. In other words,
it is the capacity to mirror on one's own personalities, abilities and behavior. Bevan (2020)
summarized that self-concept is an assortment of the qualities and features an individual use
to describe themselves. Conversely, self-esteem is more of an attitude or view that an
individual has regarding who they are, or themselves. According to Bevan, self-esteem
consists of your broad sense of self-worth and the level of satisfaction you have with
yourself” (pg. 6). Self-esteem is an element of self-concept.
Self-concept is created through communication with others. We get feedback
regarding our self, and through those, one gets to understand better who they are. Through the
same means, an individual can either improve their self-concept to become a victim to social
integration. However, we should learn to progress through interpersonal and intrapersonal
communication. We learn more about who we are and how we can improve our self-concept
and esteem.
