Trump's Foreign Policy Decisions

One of the greatest President Trump’s foreign policy decisions is the termination of

NAFTA and the establishment of USMCA. This was a more expansive free treaty agreement.

From the onset of his presidential campaigns, President Trump has been saying that the interest

of America has to come first before anything else. In this regard, he initiated renegotiations for

the terms of trade for the United States. He threatened to withdraw America’s membership from

NAFTA if negotiations did not take place (Bown & Irwin, 2019). Forthwith, President Trump

negotiated for new positions in NAFTA. He called for the elimination of tariffs in some countries

but wanted to impose tariffs in some sectors. This was in a bid to protect the interests of the U.S.

in imports, exports, and employment. Trump argued that NAFTA was meant to create more jobs

and market opportunities for the member states, but what it was doing was contrary to this. These

negotiations resulted in the creation of a new free trade pact, USMCA. This foreign policy

decision is consistent to that of other Republican Presidents in the sense that it keeps the interests

of America first. For instance, President George W. Bush participated in the negotiations that led

to the creation of NAFTA. During the negotiation of this free trade agreement, other member

states called for complete removal of tariffs or trade barriers state. However, President Bush

maintained that trade barriers were still necessary. Thus, he called for the partial elimination of

trade tariffs (Lester & Manak, 2018). Consistent with this, President Trump called for creation

termination of NAFTA in order to create another free trade agreement that will have partial

elimination of trade tariffs. This led to the creation of the USMCA. In other words, President

Trump is pursuing an isolationist foreign policy. However, Trump’s decision on NAFTA

significantly differs from those of former President Obama and Bill Clinton. President Obama

was determined to renegotiate NAFTA whereby he wanted the complete removal of tariffs
