HOW EVOLUTION HELPS US UNDERSTAND AND TREAT CANCER 2
This article reflects on how evolution continues to help humans in understanding and
treating cancer. Here, the report claims that controlling cancer is possible only if scientists are
capable of anticipating the resistance evolution to traditional treatments. The article further
reveals that humanity might be forced to rethink its war against cancer by transforming the
disease from an ordinary acute ailment to some chronic but manageable disease. The fact that
cancer is also evolving the same way humans are evolving, it would mean that humans should
focus on strategic plans that would help lessen the issue (Smithsonian Magazine, 2020). Most
people have the assumption that cancer is simply a modern phenomenon. However, it is
important to know that the disease has always been around since multi-cellularity. Normally,
evolution tends to operate within the human body, especially within the cells, thus giving rise to
cancer. Adaptive therapy is, therefore, an approach that would come in handy in such situations.
The idea is to ensure the tumor remains at manageable size while maintaining the treatment
ability, especially with the therapy that would be used (Smithsonian Magazine, 2020). In the end,
the process would be creating an evolution of resistance, especially on the body.
Most ideas that the author shares about the various ways humans can handle the
possibility of cancer in their bodies are quite interesting. The fact that the author highlights the
evolution aspect as a major determined in the process was somehow unexpected. Another
interesting bit about the article is how the author insists that there is an obvious struggle, which
tends to exist between how evolution operations within organisms populations while suppressing
cancer and ways in which it tends to work within the human bodies.
Anthropology focuses on the scientific study of various aspects such as human behavior,
humans, and societies either in their present or past state. Therefore, the article remains relevant
to anthropology, given that it explains specific human behaviors in line with the evolution
