Exploring deeply into the first paragraph of “The inheritance of Tools” by Scott Russel,
the purpose of him writing the short story was to detail the life lessons passed from one
generation to the other amidst love and loss through the use images, similes and symbols. Scott
purposes to show the life lessons learned from one generation to the other, by depicting a picture
of his father teaching him carpentry, which though he learns the hard way. Even though the story
is cast on the context of carpentry, from a big picture, the story mimics all the life lessons
learned from our parents such as hard work, endurance, patience, etc., that go along with
particular skills earned. Also, Scott purposes to show love and loss, by painting a picture of how
the death of his beloved father takes a toll on him, with a scar on his thumb being a reminder of
his father. The audience for this story is anyone who has gone through any kind of loss in life of
a loved one but with learned lessons out of the loss. Such people despite the loss of their loved
ones, they are ready to carry on with the good life lessons and values learned from the dead into
their lives and those of their next generation.
