LPN AND RN DISCUSSION 2
LPN and RN Discussion
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and registered nurses (RNs) have distinct roles. Both
are tasked with ensuring the overall wellbeing of patients. As such, they offer patient-centered
care and are mainly allocated tasks that necessitate direct contact with patients (Nursing
Licensure). Nurses in both categories must exploit potential through educational qualifications
along with skills and practice. The differences between LPNs and RNs encompasses the
treatment procedures whereby LPNs have a mandate to monitor vital signs along with changing
wound dressings. RNs administer medications through IV besides offering basic life support
services (Nursing Licensure). RNs also can engage patients or even independently in developing
wellness plans. LPNs administer medication to patients only when IV is not included, which is
the role of RNs. The procedures that entail insertion of IV catheters necessitates RN expertise
while LPNs collect urine and blood samples alongside performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR).
The roles of the healthcare team alongside the standards of practice are diverse. An
understanding of these differences and similarities are crucial for supporting the civil
environment. The basic information regarding the performance of healthcare professionals is
essential. Moreover, the rampant cases of medical errors and negligence continue to impact the
delivery of service in healthcare systems (Water et al., 2017). A civil environment is achieved
when the causes of malpractices in healthcare are identified and mitigated. As such, an
understanding of the roles and standards of practice help to develop and maintain a sound and
effective healthcare system.
